šŸ”§ Function of the Capping Station Spring

  1. Applies Pressure to Seal the Printhead
The spring pushes the cap (a rubber or silicone seal) up against the printhead nozzles when the printer is not printing. This creates an airtight seal that prevents ink from drying in the nozzles.

  2. Enables Movement and Retraction
During printing or cleaning cycles, the capping station needs to move away from the printhead. The spring allows the cap to compress and then return to its original position when needed.

  3. Supports Cleaning and Priming
During head cleaning, a vacuum pump pulls ink through the nozzles while the head is sealed over the cap. The spring helps maintain enough upward pressure to ensure a tight seal during this suction process.

  4. Prevents Ink Clogging and Air Exposure
By holding the cap snugly against the head, the spring helps keep the printhead moist, which prevents clogging from dried ink and avoids air bubbles in the nozzles.

šŸ› ļø Signs of Spring Issues

  • Ink dries on the printhead → spring may not be holding the cap tightly.

  • Nozzle clogging or banding → weak spring = poor vacuum during cleaning.

  • Cap doesn't return to position → spring may be dislodged or broken.
